If you’ve been researching red light therapy devices for a while, you probably know that many therapy device descriptions include “irradiance” values, and these almost always say that the lamp in question outputs 100 mW/cm^2/second at a distance of zero or three inches.

Several biohackers and scientists have tested some of the lights on the market and found that these irradiance values are vastly overstated. One problem is that sellers use solar meters to measure the therapeutic LED light output. Solar meters are not calibrated to LED light, and as a rule overstate power output by a factor of two or three.

This is not a scientific assessment of the state of affairs. It’s the work of engineers and biohackers who took the time to use an LED light meter rather than a solar power meter to measure photon output from some popular brands. Ari Whitten measured six very popular devices and found they output from 33 mW/cm^2 to 50 mW/cm^2 when the manufacturers claimed 100 mW/cm^2 power density at the given distance.

For example, if a manufacturer says a lamp outputs 100 mW/cm^2 at zero inches, they are claiming that the lamp transfers 100 milliwatts of photon energy to a one square centimeter spot in one second. If that lamp is really only outputting 50 milliwatts per second, then you need to double your treatment time to get the intended dose. If you rely on the 100 mW power density to calculate your dose, you will spend much too little time with your lamp to get the intended dose.
